Completed over an intensive three day period, approximately 40 hours, this project was developed in a team of three in response to Trace Elements, a brief centered on the significance of subtle, often unnoticed details. Drawing inspiration from Rachel Blau DuPlessis’ Draft 87, the prompt encouraged us to reflect on how meaning is shaped through what persists over time, what fades, what remains, and what is quietly carried with us.

Kairos is a multisensory memory studio developed as a design project exploring how we document and experience memory. Rather than focusing on milestones or major life events, it centers on the quiet, everyday moments that often go unnoticed but hold lasting emotional weight. Combining a physical recording device with a guided kit, Kairos captures ambient video, sound, scent, texture, and taste over time, building an archive of ordinary life through small, intentional interactions. The final outcome transforms these fragments into a fully sensory experience, allowing users to step back into their memories rather than simply revisit them.

When you become a Kairos client, a kit arrives at your door to begin your personal archive of everyday life. It includes a simple recording device and guided tools that prompt you to notice rather than perform your daily moments. The device captures video, sound, and scent through a single capture button, while memory and texture cards extend what can be recorded through reflection and touch. Together, the kit builds a multisensory archive of ordinary life across all five senses.

Kairos offers three ways of returning your memories, each shaped by how deeply you want to revisit your archive over time. The first returns everything after one year as a physical object containing a curated selection of your captured moments. The second extends to five years, transforming your archive into a fully immersive sensory experience built from your recorded life, designed to be stepped back into rather than viewed. The third is a generational archive that preserves your memories as a complete multisensory experience, holding not only moments, but the people and spaces connected to them for those who come after you.

he billboard and poster act as Kairos’ public-facing layer, introducing the idea of preserving the overlooked moments of everyday life. Placed in high-traffic and more intimate environments, they work together to interrupt routine and shift attention toward the ordinary details that are constantly passing unnoticed. The messaging is kept minimal and reflective, designed to create curiosity and emotional pause.
