The York University x Toronto Raptors T-shirt was a collaborative design project focused on creating a shirt that equally represents both brands while being something students would genuinely want to wear. The challenge was to bring together two distinct identities in a way that felt cohesive, rather than like two separate brands placed on the same shirt.

on paper.
I started by sketching out different ways to bring York and the Raptors together, exploring symbols, shapes, lettering, and imagery to see how the two identities could connect.

three directions.
Symbolic
This direction explored the values and identities behind York and the Raptors through symbolism. I experimented with custom lettering, using each letter in “YORK” to represent a different idea.
Abstract
This direction focused on capturing the energy and movement of basketball through abstract shapes and forms. Drawing inspiration from the York University logo, I experimented with basketball court lines and ink-like shapes to create a dynamic composition that brought both identities together.
Representational
Inspired by vintage comic book graphics, this direction took a more illustrative approach to the collaboration. I explored combining a Raptor, a basketball, and the Toronto skyline to create a bold, graphic design that connected York, the city, and the Raptors.

bringing it
together.
After receiving feedback from MLSE, we identified the strongest elements from the three design directions. The representational, comic-book-inspired concept stood out the most, so I developed it further by incorporating abstract elements from the other concepts and exploring how the symbolic “YORK” lettering could fit into the design. This draft brought the different ideas together for another round of review.
Following the review, we decided to remove the YU Ball logo, as it felt too similar to the Raptors logo, and the “YRK RPT” lettering, which felt out of place. With the main elements established, the design was close to done. My next step was to refine the composition and bring the remaining elements together into a more cohesive design.

the final.
After removing the YU Ball logo and “YRK RPT” lettering, I focused on refining the overall composition. I adjusted how the remaining elements interacted with one another, blending the comic-book-inspired illustrations and abstract details to create a more cohesive design that balanced both York University and the Toronto Raptors.
